What is ADSL ?
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Loop (whatever that means)
ADSL is Broadband Internet over your phone line from a BT enabled telephone exchange. When we say 'over' your phone line, it is actually very different to dialing up with a modem. The signal is inaudible and does not affect phone use in any way (it does affect credit card machines). You can be on the Internet and speaking to someone at the same time without ether being affected. It does this by using a special 'splitter'. This little white box plugs into your existing phone socket and provides an ADSL phone socket plus a normal BT phone socket. This separates the ADSL signal and your phone signal. You will use an ADSL 'modem' A simple cheap USB device can connect one Windows PC to the Internet. A better solution is the ADSL Firewall which can connect your whole network of any type of computer to the Internet using your Ethernet port.
ADSL speed options start at 512k and go up to 2Mbit download speeds. Upload speed is always 256k. You can get ADSL from County Broadband, you don't have to use BT. We will enable your line provided your exchange is enabled. You will be sharing the service with up to 50 other users, this is called 50:1 contention ratio. Availability depends on two factors; 1. BT have enabled your exchange. 2. You are within 3km of cabling to the exchange. If you can't get ADSL you may still get Broadband. We offer Wireless Internet options which can get you connected.
