Should the Church support Community Broadband?

Following today’s episode of Songs of Praise we would love to hear your views on the role of the church in supporting rural broadband provision: We believe the church is uniquely positioned at the heart of the community – both spiritually and physically making it an ideal partner – what do you think?

  1. I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t help, it’s an excellent idea and several ISPs around the country have already begun to deploy similar services. It’s not a total solution as you still have the problem of limited backhaul bandwidth to consider but it’s an excellent way to reach people who aren’t within reach due to poor fixed line connectivity.

  2. Geoff says:

The buildings are often tall and pointy, but not necessarily central or in line of sight. ‘Uniquely’ is kind of ‘wishful’ – we work closely with community associations and local councils, but no-one has all the contacts or comms. Well worth exploring, as churches have a message to get out, and their rural comms problems are similar to others (sparse populations, hard to reach).
We may have a backhaul problem in connecting with God, and WiMax type apps may not be a total solution. Those with elderly versions of Windows do find prayer and patient waiting is the only option! By the time we’ve downloaded Songs of Praise they will be transmitting next week’s programme.
